AG's Office needs 1500 lawyers to fulfil Article 88 mandate-Godfred Dame
During the inaugural Public Sector Lawyers Conference, Mr. Dame noted that the Attorney General’s Office ideally needs a workforce of 1,500 attorneys to fully carry out its constitutional mandate under Article 88.
Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has emphasized the urgent requirement to expand the team of state attorneys to ensure his office can effectively meet its responsibilities.
During the inaugural Public Sector Lawyers Conference, Mr. Dame noted that the Attorney General’s Office ideally needs a workforce of 1,500 attorneys to fully carry out its constitutional mandate under Article 88.
He highlighted the importance of assigning at least one state attorney to each Ministry, Department, Agency (MDA), and District Assembly nationwide. He argued that Such an arrangement would help prevent the inefficiencies resulting from a fragmented approach to public legal services.
To resolve these challenges, Mr. Dame proposed that all lawyers in state-owned agencies should come under the employment of the Attorney General’s Office.
Despite the staffing shortfall, Mr. Dame expressed his appreciation to President Akufo-Addo for his efforts to improve the work environment for state attorneys, mentioning the recent completion of the Law House, a 12-story headquarters for the Attorney General's Office, inaugurated on June 10, 2024.
He described it as a "powerful testament" to the president’s commitment to bettering conditions for state attorneys.
Looking ahead, Mr. Dame also pledged that if the NPP administration is re-elected, every regional Ministry of Justice office will have a permanent facility, further supporting his vision of a cohesive, well-resourced public legal service prepared to meet the nation’s growing legal demands.
