The community of Denase, in the Afigya Kwabre North District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, is reeling after a deadly gun attack on Thursday night left two people dead and three others injured. The Ghana Police Service has launched a full-scale investigation into what local officials believe may have been a targeted assault rather than a random robbery.

Among the deceased is Peggy Ayelbassah, a young woman whose promising future in the healthcare field was tragically cut short. Peggy was reportedly en route to Salaga to attend an admission interview for nursing training when she was fatally shot. Her death has sparked national outrage and renewed calls for justice and security reforms.

Member of Parliament for the constituency, Collins Adomako-Mensah, confirmed the incident in a social media post, revealing that Peggy had contacted him just a day prior making her loss deeply personal for many in the community. According to eyewitness accounts, the attack occurred late Thursday evening when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a vehicle traveling through Denase. The scene was described as chaotic, with multiple rounds of gunfire causing panic among residents.

Three other victims who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment at Offinso Saint Patrick Hospital. Medical staff report that the injured are in stable condition but continue to be monitored closely. Kwabena Asamoah, Unit Committee Chairman for the Denase Electoral Area, told reporters that early indications suggest the incident was premeditated. “This didn’t seem like a robbery. It appeared more like a targeted attack. The way the shooting was done, it looked like they knew who they were after,” he said.

The incident has intensified security concerns in Denase, a community that has experienced similar episodes of violence in the past. Residents are demanding immediate intervention from law enforcement and the Ministry of Interior to bolster public safety infrastructure and prevent further loss of life.

From a legal perspective, the attack raises pressing questions about the effectiveness of Ghana’s current criminal justice and public safety frameworks in rural communities. Legal analysts and human rights advocates are urging authorities to apply advanced investigative tools and digital evidence-gathering technologies to swiftly identify and prosecute the perpetrators.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its commitment to pursuing the case with urgency. Digital forensic units and crime scene investigators have reportedly been deployed, signaling the potential integration of legal tech solutions in the evidence-gathering process.
