A Circuit Court in Bekwai has sentenced a 30-year-old man to 25 years in prison with hard labour for his part in an armed robbery at a mining site in the Ashanti South area.

The convict, Dominic Ofori, also known as “Fanta”, pleaded guilty to robbery under Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, and was sentenced accordingly.

Police say the case relates to a raid on 20 March 2022 at a mining site at Manso Akwasiso, where armed men were accused of targeting gold concentrate.

According to investigators, officers had received intelligence that a group intended to attack the site and mounted an operation, including an ambush.

Police said four armed suspects arrived at about 17:30, fired shots and escaped with gold concentrate.

An exchange of gunfire followed between the suspects and officers on surveillance, police said.

Three suspects — named by police as Abu Abubakar, Musah Latif and Gideon Takyi — were shot during the confrontation and later died after being taken to St Martins Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum.

Dominic Ofori escaped at the time, police said, and remained at large until he was arrested on 16 February 2026.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command said the conviction reflected its efforts to curb violent crime linked to mining activity, and urged the public to continue supporting investigations with credible information.
