Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail following his appearance before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

He was released on GH¢1 million bail with two sureties, conditions he has since met. Three mining-related charges are expected to be filed against him at the High Court in Accra on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

Chairman Wontumi reported to the CID headquarters on Monday, October 6, 2025, for questioning over his alleged involvement in illegal mining activities. His appearance followed a directive from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, who had warned that Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to comply.

His lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, told reporters that his client was cooperating fully with investigators. However, he cautioned against any move to revoke Wontumi’s existing police enquiry bail, describing such an attempt as one that would be “vigorously resisted.”
