Chairman Wontumi to appear before CID today over Akonta mining probe
His appearance follows a warning from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, who cautioned on Friday, October 3, that Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to comply.
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is scheduled to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025.
His appearance follows a warning from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, who cautioned on Friday, October 3, that Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to comply. The Attorney General disclosed that charges related to the case have already been signed.
The investigation involves Akonta Mining Limited, a company linked to Chairman Wontumi, which is under scrutiny for alleged illegal mining operations. Dr. Ayine indicated that the probe had faced delays due to critical case documents being withheld under the previous administration.
In an interview on Sunday, October 5, Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed his client’s intention to cooperate with investigators.
However, Mr. Appiah-Kubi described the Attorney General’s public caution as unwarranted.
