Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee, Chairperson of the Constitutional Review Consultative Committee, has emphasized the need for targeted revisions to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, advocating for focused amendments rather than a full-scale overhaul.
Speaking on Joy FM on Thursday, January 9, Kasser-Tee noted that while the 1992 Constitution has proven to be Ghana's most resilient, its longevity has revealed specific areas requiring improvement. She argued for a strategic approach to constitutional reform.
"I think that at this stage, this is where we take specific areas, focus on them properly, know exactly what we want, and do targeted amendments, rather than start another whole trial and error process,” she said.
Her comments followed President John Dramani Mahama's announcement of an upcoming National Constitutional Review Validation Conference to revive the stalled constitutional review process. Speaking at the 92nd Jalsa Salana of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Winneba, the President reiterated his commitment to addressing constitutional shortcomings, particularly in promoting judicial independence and reducing systemic inequalities.
Kasser-Tee also highlighted the importance of public engagement in the review process, emphasizing that widespread agreement on proposed changes is crucial for lasting reform.
