The Government of Ghana and Gold Fields Ghana Limited have reached an amicable agreement regarding the transition arrangements for the Damang Mine.

This follows the announcement made on May 18, 2021, of a new strategic mining lease agreement between Gold Fields Ghana Limited and the Government of Ghana.

A statement signed by the spokesperson to the President indicates that, under the new agreement, Gold Fields will transition from an owner-mining model to a contractor-mining model.

According to the statement, this change is expected to enhance operational flexibility and reduce costs, thereby ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Damang Mine.

The statement also notes that the process of selecting a suitable contractor and transitioning affected workers has begun. Multiple stakeholder consultations have been held to ensure that the transition is conducted fairly and transparently.

Additionally, employees who may be affected by the transition will be provided with enhanced severance packages and other support services.

An appeals board will also be established to hear and resolve any grievances that may arise during the transition process.
