Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's unexpected announcement on May 22 that the general election would be held on July 4 caught many in Westminster off guard.
Following this, the Gambling Commission began investigating potential betting offenses related to the election date.
Last Friday, the commission notified the Met that it was looking into bets allegedly placed by a constable from the Met's Royalty and Specialist Protection Command.
The Met promptly referred the issue to its Directorate of Professional Standards, which initiated an investigation and suspended the officer from active duty.
The officer was arrested on Monday, held in custody, and subsequently released on bail while further inquiries are conducted.
The case has also been forwarded to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Close protection officers, who safeguard prominent figures such as members of the Royal Family and top government officials, provide security during travel and daily activities.
The Met confirmed that the Gambling Commission is leading the investigation into the betting allegations, with the Met’s investigation proceeding concurrently.
