Nana Pantu Nangor II, Chief of Subinso Number Two in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region, has called on government to extend National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) coverage to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who fled the recent Gbinyiri clashes and are currently seeking refuge in his community.
The chief voiced deep concern over the deteriorating health of many of the displaced, particularly children and nursing mothers. He stressed that NHIS registration would enable them to access medical treatment, while also appealing for broader humanitarian relief to sustain their basic needs.
Nana Nangor II made the appeal during an interaction with the press following a visit by Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikankyi Kuyo, Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).
More than 800 individuals, mostly women and children, have been uprooted from their homes since violence erupted at Gbinyiri in the Sawla/Tuna/Kalba District of the Savannah Region on August 25, 2025. The majority are being sheltered in Subinso No. 2, while others have found temporary refuge in Botenso, Nwoase, and Nchiraa within the Wenchi Municipality.
The chief emphasized that in addition to healthcare, the displaced urgently require food supplies, clothing, footwear, blankets, and other essentials for survival.
For his part, Maj. (Rtd) Dr. Kuyo explained that his visit was aimed at assessing the living conditions of the displaced to better determine the type of interventions required.
He commended the chiefs and residents of the host communities for their solidarity and urged continued efforts toward resolving the conflict and restoring peace in Gbinyiri and its neighboring areas.
He was accompanied by Sheikh Ahmed Rufai Bolas, NADMO Deputy Director-General in charge of Technical Operations, Mrs. Fati Kine-Lam, Bono Regional NADMO Director, Mr. Suleiman Mohammed, Wenchi Municipal NADMO Director, Superintendent George Kwakye, Wenchi Municipal Police Commander, and Madam Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, Municipal Chief Executive of Wenchi.
