Interior Minister pledges solutions to prison feeding challenges
During a visit to the Prisons Service Headquarters in Accra on Monday, the Minister emphasized the need for a sustainable approach to inmate rehabilitation.

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has raised concerns about the insufficient budget for feeding inmates and assured the Ghana Prisons Service of efforts to resolve the issue.
During a visit to the Prisons Service Headquarters in Accra on Monday, the Minister emphasized the need for a sustainable approach to inmate rehabilitation.
He noted that discussions would be held with the Finance Ministry to address the funding shortfall and improve overall conditions for prisoners.
The visit provided an opportunity for the Minister to interact with the Service’s leadership and staff, gaining deeper insight into its daily operations. He underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening rehabilitation and reintegration programs, focusing on vocational training and employment opportunities to support former inmates as they transition back into society.
Recognizing the Ghana Prisons Service’s critical role in public safety, Alhaji Muntaka commended its efforts in maintaining secure custody, promoting inmate welfare, and facilitating rehabilitation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to prison decongestion through alternative sentencing measures, such as non-custodial penalties.
The Minister also highlighted the need to modernize prison facilities by implementing digital record-keeping systems, biometric identification, and enhanced security surveillance.
