The legal team representing former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has informed the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) that their client is currently out of the country undergoing medical treatment. This, they say, explains his inability to comply with a directive to appear in person before the OSP on February 10, 2025.

In a letter, Mr. Ofori-Atta’s solicitors noted that he had missed an earlier summons on January 24 because he was already abroad.

They added that the initial notice from the OSP had been left at his residence’s security post while he was away, meaning he was unaware of it.

The legal representatives further noted that Mr. Ofori-Atta had informed both the previous and current Chief of Staff about his planned medical trip before his departure in early January. They explained that he was still undergoing medical assessments, with treatment options yet to be finalized.

Given these circumstances, the lawyers requested that the OSP postpone his required in-person appearance until he returns to Ghana. They also assured their full cooperation in providing relevant information for the ongoing investigations.

This response surfaced shortly after the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, held a press conference on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, where he publicly declared Mr. Ofori-Atta a fugitive.

According to the OSP, the former minister is under investigation for alleged financial losses incurred by the state in various transactions. The probe covers multiple contracts involving Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority, agreements between the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC), the National Cathedral project, and the Ministry of Health’s ambulance procurement process.
