Koforidua: Court convicts woman over acid attack on deceased boyfriend
Vera Asare entered the guilty plea on Monday, 2 March 2026, under a plea bargaining arrangement involving the Attorney General’s office, her lawyers and the victim’s family.
A 25-year-old online trader has been convicted of manslaughter at the Koforidua High Court after admitting responsibility for the death of her boyfriend, Daniel Omane.
Vera Asare entered the guilty plea on Monday, 2 March 2026, under a plea bargaining arrangement involving the Attorney General’s office, her lawyers and the victim’s family. The agreement recommends a 10-year prison sentence.
The court, however, postponed sentencing to 11 March and ordered a mandatory pregnancy test before the penalty is decided.
That decision drew angry reactions from relatives of Mr Omane, a mobile phone dealer known to many as “Anelka”, who packed the courtroom wearing T-shirts carrying his photograph and the message “Justice for Anelka”.
Prosecutors told the court the couple had been together for years, but the relationship was marked by repeated conflict and accusations of infidelity. The court heard that on 29 November 2024, Mr Omane was asleep when Asare allegedly poured a liquid later confirmed as acid on him.
He was first taken to a clinic in Adweso, then transferred to the Eastern Regional Hospital, and later moved to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for specialist care. He died on 15 July 2025, after months of treatment.
Outside the court, family members said they were worried the pregnancy test could be used to dilute the proposed sentence, and warned they would challenge any attempt to undermine the process.
Asare, who had been on bail to care for the couple’s young child, remains convicted and is awaiting sentencing once the medical requirement is completed.
