Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has broken his silence following his release from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), sharply criticising the circumstances of his arrest and accusing the institution of pursuing what he describes as a reckless operational trajectory.

Kpebu had reported to the OSP on Wednesday, 3 December, to assist with investigations into corruption allegations he had previously levelled against Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng. However, before the substantive engagement could begin, a confrontation at the entrance of the OSP headquarters led to his arrest.

Speaking in an interview with TV3, Kpebu said the experience was surreal given that, in his view, no conduct on his part justified detention.

Kpebu was unequivocal in assigning responsibility to the leadership of the OSP, insisting that the arrest underscores a deeper institutional problem under Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.

The lawyer’s comments amplify an already fractious relationship with the OSP. He has repeatedly criticised the office for what he considers procedural improprieties, including assigning investigations to junior officers who report directly to the Special Prosecutor. According to Kpebu, only an independently constituted body can credibly evaluate the allegations he has lodged.

Kpebu has been one of the most vocal critics of the OSP’s operational posture. He has questioned the handling of several high-profile matters, including the investigation involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, arguing that the OSP failed to adhere to key procedural requirements.

His latest detainment adds a new layer to the ongoing tensions between the institution and one of its most persistent external critics—raising fresh questions about the OSP’s engagement protocols, governance culture, and stakeholder management in politically sensitive investigations.

The OSP has yet to publicly comment on Kpebu’s remarks or provide additional detail on the rationale for the arrest.
