A 24-year-old commercial rider has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment after admitting to robbing the secretary to Namibia’s High Commissioner in Ghana.

The sentence was imposed by the Circuit Court at Dansoman, where Daniel Asiuebi had earlier pleaded guilty to robbery and causing unlawful damage. Her Honour Nancy Teiko Searyoh delivered the punishment when the case came up again on 1 April 2026.

The prosecution told the court that the victim, Anneli Niinpungu Ananyanga, was attacked on 23 February 2026 while walking in the Airport Residential Area in Accra. At the time, she was carrying a handbag containing personal, financial and diplomatic items.

Police said the accused rode up on a black Royal 125A motorbike, grabbed the bag by force and escaped.

Among the items taken were an iPhone 15 Pro Max, a Huawei P50 Pro, earpods, bank cards, cash, keys and official identification materials. The stolen property was valued at GH¢36,176.

The bag also contained sensitive diplomatic and personal documents, including a Namibian diplomatic passport, a Ghanaian diplomatic card, a Namibian driver’s licence, a national identity card and a medical card.

Investigators later traced one of the stolen phones to Agbogbloshie, where it was recovered from a man identified as Miracle Asare. That recovery led police to other phone dealers in Dansoman and at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, who reportedly said Asiuebi had sold the devices to them.

According to the prosecution, the accused later admitted his role in the robbery. In his caution statement, he said he sold the stolen phones, spent the money for his personal needs and burned the remaining items.

The court also heard that he confessed to carrying out similar attacks in other parts of Accra, including Kaneshie, Achimota and the Airport Residential Area.

After reviewing the facts and his guilty plea, the court sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
