The Parliament of Ghana has passed a bill to establish the National Roads Authority.

This followed the introduction of the motion by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye during the third reading of the Bill.

He indicated that the Bill would create the National Roads Authority, an independent organization tasked with planning, developing, maintaining, and overseeing Ghana’s national road network.

Mr. Asenso-Boakye emphasized that “the new agency will enhance the management of Ghana’s national roads by consolidating the three key departments currently within the Ministry — Ghana Highway Authority, the Department of Urban Roads, and the Department of Feeder Roads — into a single entity.”

He added that the reorganization will place the responsibility for managing trunk roads, arterial roads, collector roads, and district and inter-district roads under the new  Authority.

In 2023, the Cabinet approved the creation of the National Roads Authority to tackle significant issues in the road sector, such as poor coordination, duplicated efforts, inadequate maintenance, inconsistent standards, and project delays.

Thus, establishing the National Roads Authority is necessary for achieving a well-planned, well-maintained, and safe road network in Ghana.
