Soldier, security operatives granted GH¢2m bail over alleged assault
It further directed that one surety for each accused person must own landed property within the court’s jurisdiction valued at not less than the bail amount.
A soldier and six security operatives accused of assaulting workers at a Chinese-owned company have been granted bail by the Accra Circuit Court One.
Each accused person was granted bail in the sum of GH¢2 million with three sureties.
The court ordered that all sureties must be justified with proof of residence.
It further directed that one surety for each accused person must own landed property within the court’s jurisdiction valued at not less than the bail amount.
The accused persons have also been ordered to report to investigators every Wednesday and Friday.
They must deposit their passports with the Court Registry and are not allowed to travel outside the court’s jurisdiction.
The accused are Lance Corporal Benjamin Agyekum, Mahama Iddrisu, Dauda Seidu, Isaac Ofori, Adom Bills, Hayford Boafo and Ato McHenry.
They have all denied charges of conspiracy to form an illegal group, assault and membership of an organised criminal group.
They are expected to reappear before the court on June 5, 2026.
Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police Issah Achiburi said the case was reported by officers from the Accra Central Regional Police Command.
According to the prosecution, Lance Corporal Agyekum, 32, is a serving military officer with the 5th Infantry Battalion at Burma Camp.
The other accused persons, whose ages range from 32 to 48, are alleged to have presented themselves as security operatives from the National Security Secretariat.
The court heard that at about midday on May 6, 2026, police received a distress call from SI Jun Toiletries Manufacturing Company at Akwakwa, near Mankrong Nkwanta in the Central Region.
The accused persons were allegedly dressed in military and immigration uniforms and travelling in a Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number GW 8887-V.
The prosecution said they entered the company’s premises, handcuffed some workers and assaulted them.
Police officers later went to the scene, rescued the victims and arrested the accused persons.
ASP Achiburi said the accused admitted entering the premises and claimed to be members of a National Security Monitoring and Evaluation Team.
However, they allegedly failed to provide identification to support that claim.
Police say investigations are still ongoing.
