Workers enrolled with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust cannot name a boyfriend or girlfriend as a beneficiary under the pension scheme, according to SSNIT.

The clarification was given by Frank Molbila, the Trust’s General Manager in charge of Benefits, during a regional engagement in Sunyani organised by SSNIT together with the Trades Union Congress.

He explained that nominations under the scheme are limited to blood relatives, and urged contributors to regularly update their records to ensure the right beneficiaries are captured.

The forum, held under the theme “Empowering Unions, Secure Futures: Deepening Pension Literacy Across Ghana,” formed part of a broader national outreach aimed at improving understanding of pensions and strengthening engagement with organised labour.

Mr Molbila used the event to encourage more workers to join the scheme, describing the SSNIT pension as a dependable long-term safeguard.

He said one of its main strengths is that benefits continue for as long as the pensioner lives.

According to him, SSNIT paid GH¢6.77 billion in pension benefits in 2025 and expects that figure to rise to about GH¢8.21 billion by the end of 2026.

He also disclosed that the oldest pensioner currently on the scheme is 107 years old, while the highest monthly pension being paid stands at GH¢213,000. The lowest, he said, is about GH¢400.

On invalidity pensions, Mr Molbila said the highest beneficiary currently receives GH¢19,923 a month and is 86 years old, having remained on the payroll for about 36 years.

He explained that invalidity pension is paid to members who suffer a permanent physical or mental disability that leaves them unable to work.

He added that the youngest invalidity pensioner on the scheme is now 32 years old.

SSNIT, he said, paid GH¢40.8 million in invalidity pensions in 2025.

He ended by advising contributors to take retirement planning seriously and to keep their personal and beneficiary details up to date.
