Supreme Court lines up host of activities to mark 150th Anniversary

The Supreme Court of Ghana has unveiled a month-long programme of activities to commemorate its 150th anniversary, celebrating a historic judicial milestone under the theme of its enduring role in Ghana’s rule of law architecture.

The anniversary, marking the period from 1876 to 2026, will open on Thursday, July 2, with an anniversary lecture at the University of Cape Coast and a sod-cutting ceremony in Cape Coast.

According to the programme outline, the celebrations will continue with a media engagement on Tuesday, July 7, followed by a health walk, float, and legal outreach in Accra on Saturday, July 11.

Other activities lined up include a “What-Do-You-Know” event on Sunday, July 12, and anniversary activities in Kumasi on Wednesday, July 15 and Thursday, July 16. These will include an anniversary lecture and outreach programme.

The Supreme Court will also host a moot court in Accra on Monday, July 20 and Tuesday, July 21, as part of efforts to deepen public engagement with the justice system and promote legal education.

On Thursday, July 23, the anniversary programme will feature another lecture in Accra, alongside stakeholder engagements. This will be followed by sports activities in Accra on Saturday, July 25.

The climax of the celebration will be a durbar in Accra on Wednesday, July 29, with a dinner and awards night scheduled for Thursday, July 30. The anniversary programme will officially close with a thanksgiving service on Friday, July 31.

The 150th anniversary is expected to bring together members of the judiciary, the Bar, legal academics, policymakers, institutional stakeholders and the public to reflect on the Supreme Court’s legacy, its contribution to constitutional governance, and its strategic role in strengthening justice delivery in Ghana.
