The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a 22-year-old ex-convict, Fatawu Abdellah, also known as "Rebel," to 15 years of hard labor in prison for robbery and threatening to stab a student.
Although Abdellah denied the charges, the court, presided over by Hathia Ama Manu, found him guilty after a full trial. Chief Superintendent of Police Alex Odonkor prosecuted the case.
According to the prosecution, the victim, a student residing with her mother in Bogoso, encountered Abdellah, a small-scale miner from Atechem Zongo in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality. Abdellah was reportedly part of a group of young men who frequently harassed and robbed hawkers, travelers, and residents in Bogoso at night.
On October 23, 2023, around 10:30 PM, the victim was playing a game on her Infinix Hot 9 mobile phone at the KEK bus terminal in Bogoso when Abdellah approached her from behind and tried to snatch the phone. When the student resisted, Abdellah threatened to stab her if she continued to hold on to the device. In the struggle, he bit her right thumb and managed to take the phone.
The victim immediately reported the incident to the Bogoso police and was issued a medical form to seek treatment at the Bogoso Government Hospital. Dr. Anthony Lucky Arthur treated the victim and endorsed the medical form, which was returned to the police for further investigation.
On November 28, 2023, Abdellah was spotted in Bogoso and apprehended. During his interrogation, he denied biting the victim, but the stolen phone was recovered from him. Following the trial, Abdellah was convicted and sentenced, marking the end of his crime spree in the area.
