A district court at Toase has sentenced a 23-year-old unemployed man to 18 months in prison after he admitted stealing electronic items belonging to a civil engineer.

The convict, Yaw Mensah, pleaded guilty to stealing and was convicted on his own plea before the court presided over by Robert Addo.

The prosecution said the case began on 1 April 2026 when a police officer, General Sergeant Annor, noticed Mensah in suspicious circumstances while returning from duty. According to the court, the officer found him at a corner trying to open an HP laptop.

When confronted, Mensah reportedly tried to run, but was overpowered, arrested and handed over to the Nkawie Police.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Frank Acheampong told the court that during investigations, Mensah admitted in his caution statement that he had taken the laptop and two Android phones from a vehicle belonging to Daniel Awuku, a civil engineer.

The items, valued at GH¢8,000, had allegedly been stolen from the complainant’s car after it was left unlocked.

Police said the accused later led investigators to the complainant’s residence and showed them how he carried out the theft. The complainant was then able to identify the recovered items and formally report the matter.

Following the investigations, Mensah was charged and brought before the Toase District Court, where he received an 18-month prison sentence.
