Security personnel in Nkwanta in the Oti Region have arrested two people after intercepting a large quantity of ammunition in separate operations.

The arrests followed two intelligence-led operations carried out on May 17 by police and military personnel as part of efforts to stop the illegal movement of arms in the area.

In the first operation, a night patrol team at a security checkpoint stopped a 66-seater MGI passenger bus with registration number AS248-P.

The bus was searched after security officers received intelligence about suspicious movement of ammunition.

During the search, officers found 750 live J/G cartridges hidden in a black polythene bag.

The cartridges had been packed in three brown boxes, with each box containing 250 rounds.

Security officials said one of the occupants of the bus, Hudu Mahama, a 53-year-old driver’s mate, admitted during initial questioning that the ammunition belonged to him.

In a second operation on the same day, a joint police and military task force pursued a motorbike rider suspected of transporting ammunition illegally.

During the chase, a box fell from the motorbike.

The rider managed to escape, but the box was retrieved by the security team.

It contained 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges, making a total of 250 rounds.

Following preliminary investigations, another suspect, Christian Kwasi Alonise, 57, was arrested in connection with the discovery.

The two operations led to the seizure of 1,000 rounds of ammunition in total.

Security agencies say the operations form part of continued efforts to maintain peace in Nkwanta and prevent the circulation of illegal arms and ammunition
