A nine-year-old girl is being treated in hospital in the Juaboso District after police say her mother allegedly cut off one of her toes as punishment for returning home late.

The suspect, 31-year-old Vivian Anto of Sefwi Proso, has been arrested and is in police custody while investigations continue.

According to a police situational report, the matter was reported on 3 April 2026 at about 4:20pm by Stephen Anto, also of Sefwi Proso. He told police that earlier that morning, at around 9:30am, the woman allegedly used a pair of scissors to sever the child’s right index toe.

The victim, identified as Diana Boakye, was taken to Kofikrom SDA Hospital, where she remains on admission and is said to be responding to treatment.

Police say officers went to the hospital after receiving the complaint and found the girl with a freshly bandaged right foot. An initial examination, they said, confirmed that the toe had been cut off with a sharp object.

During questioning, the child reportedly identified her mother as the person who caused the injury.

Investigators also recovered the severed toe, documented it with photographs and preserved it as evidence. A medical report form was issued to support the case.

Police say the suspect is expected to be taken to court after the Easter break, when sittings resume. Investigations are still underway.
