Police in the Western North Region have arrested five people over a robbery at a spare parts shop in Asankragwa, where two Chinese nationals were attacked and a large sum of money was stolen.

According to police, four of the suspects were arrested on 12 March 2026 not long after the robbery while they were allegedly trying to escape. A fifth suspect was later apprehended by residents on 8 April and handed over to the Asankragwa District Police.

The case began when Chen Zchao and his younger brother, Yao Chan, reported that six armed men had stormed their shop at Malta in Asankragwa at about 6:30pm on 12 March.

Police say the attackers were armed with two pump-action guns and cutlasses. During the raid, they allegedly took three mobile phones and GH¢200,000 before fleeing in a black Toyota Voxy in the direction of Sefwi Bekwai.

Once the report was made, officers launched an immediate pursuit involving the Asankragwa Night Patrol and personnel at the Sumpre Police Checkpoint.

At about 8:00pm, police intercepted the vehicle, registered GS 756-25. A search, investigators say, led to the recovery of GH¢198,200 and three mobile phones identified as an iPhone 13, a Nokia C300 and a Villoan handset.

Police also say they found two pump-action guns with 14 AA cartridges, a Bruni Mod 84 9mm PAK pistol loaded with eight rounds, a machete, an amulet and two CCTV decoders.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Issaku Ibrahim, Fatau Ali, Yahaya Mumuni and Emmanuel Antwi. The name of the fifth suspect has not been disclosed.

Investigators say the suspects admitted during questioning that they had travelled from Obuasi to carry out the robbery. Their cautioned statements have been taken and the recovered items retained as evidence.

All five remain in police custody as investigations continue.
