The Chairman of the Council of Bureaux of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme, Henry Bukari, has stressed the urgent need for prompt resolution of cross-border motor insurance claims to bolster trade within the West African sub-region.

Mr. Bukari, who is Managing Director of Phoenix Insurance Company Ghana, further emphasized the importance of facilitating the seamless movement of individuals across ECOWAS countries.

He made this appeal during the inaugural general assembly of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme in Conakry, Guinea.

The ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme, an expansion of motor insurance coverage, aims to enhance the free movement of people and goods within the ECOWAS Region by ensuring swift and equitable compensation for cross-border accidents.

Additionally, Mr. Bukari urged insurance claim handlers to prioritize the interests of accident victims from foreign countries, expediting the processing of their claims to provide financial relief.

The primary objective of the Conakry Assembly is to revise technical guidelines related to the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme, particularly those governing cross-border claim settlements.

Bukari also talked about the necessity of this review to align with evolving trends in the insurance sector across the ECOWAS sub-region.

Mrs. Souadou Balde, Second Vice Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Guinea, representing the Central Bank Governor, Mr. Karamo Kaba, affirmed the Guinean government's commitment to implementing resolutions from the meeting to ensure prompt settlement of cross-border claims.

Marie Bilé, Chargé d’Affaires of the Resident Representative of the ECOWAS Commission in Guinea, underscored her dual role: to learn from the proceedings and ensure adherence to ECOWAS regulations for the collective well-being of the regional community.
