The GaDangme Council has stated that the relationship between the 63-year-old Ga traditional chief and the 12-year-old girl is a betrothal but not a marriage.

Over the weekend, there was a huge uproar when a video surfaced of the traditional ruler allegedly marrying the girl at a widely attended traditional ceremony.

However, in a statement signed by its president, Ayikoi Otoo, the Council notes that this position, which was confirmed by the traditional ruler in their engagement, has altered the legal implication contrary to the many calls being made by the public for him to be arrested for an offense.

The Council further concedes that irrespective of the fact that betrothal could involve an underage person, it does not grant the license to the traditional ruler to start having with the child so as to jeopardize her education.

It is therefore calling on the Gborbo Wulomo to address the issue and mitigate the concerns surrounding the betrothal to ensure that the girl’s well-being and rights are protected especially prioritizing her education throughout the process.

Also, the Council wants the parents of the child to keep an eye on her and let her understand that she is still an infant notwithstanding the betrothal.
