The Deputy Minister for Education, Rev Ntim Fordjour has indicated that his Ministry is still in talks with the leadership of the University Teachers Association, to get them to rescind their decision to go embark on another strike action.

He noted that the Ministry has already met UTAG leadership and is doing everything possible to avert their impending strike action.

Speaking on the ‘Ade Akye Abia’ program on Okay FM, the Deputy Minister, who doubles as a Member of Parliament indicated that their discussion so far with UTAG has been fruitful but still hoping a final agreement is reached between them.

The National Executive Committee of the University Teachers Association(UTAG) had earlier served notice to its members and the General public of its decision to embark on another nationwide strike action effective October 8, 2021.

The Decision, according to the Association, was taken at the end of its 20th Congress, which was necessitated by its September 26, 2021 discussion with the Government relative to the wages and welfare package of its members.

It was indicated that at the said meeting, the Government did not concur with UTAG’s decision for its members to be paid above $1200 in 2024.

A formal statement was expected to be released on October 5, 2021, by the National Executive Committee of UTAG to this effect. The statement was expected to provide clear-cut modalities of the strike action.

Mr. Fordjour, therefore, urged the leadership of the University Teachers Association to remain calm and have patience with the Government, as it seeks to address their concerns.
