Six students of KNUST accused of rape remanded
The six are alleged to have raped a first-year student of the school.
The Asokore Mampong District Court has remanded six students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) into police custody following arrests for rape.
The six, Patrick Fosu, Edwin Nii Noi Quaynor, John Wilson, Kingsley Asiedu Andoh, Thompson Nii, and Assafua Eric are alleged to have raped a first-year student of the school.
“These are students of KNUST who have been accused of rape. Looking at the facts which have been presented to us, honestly, we don’t see rape but that’s what they have been accused of and once someone is accused, the law says the person is innocent until proven guilty or the person pleads otherwise.
So, now until they plead that they are guilty or a court of competent jurisdiction finds them guilty, they are innocent. At this material moment, this is a court of first instance and they have been brought here for purposes of remanding them into lawful custody,” Richard Adu Darko, lawyer for the accused persons is quoted to have said in an interview with TV3.
While the court adjourned the matter to August 18, 2022, Mr. Adu Darko says he would seek the “appropriate forum” to get bail for the accused persons to enable them write their end-of-semester examinations.
