The Regional Coordinating Council of the Upper East Region has announced a ban on the wearing of smocks in the Bawku township.

The ban took effect on Tuesday, 23rd November, 2021 following an official communication from the Office of the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council to that effect.

Smocks are generally regarded as a traditional outfit for persons in Northern Ghana.

However, the REGSEC noted that its unique design allowed “criminals or unscrupulous elements hide arms and ammunitions in [them] and attack opponents or innocent civilians.”

The Municipal Security Council has since been tasked with enforcing the ban, in the letter signed by the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon Stephen Yakubu.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, 24th November, 2021, the Minister for the Interior imposed a curfew on the Bawku Municipality and its environs, following further “threats of insecurity in the communities concerned.”

A statement signed by the Minister, Hon Ambrose Dery indicated that the curfew will last from 4:00pm to 6:00am.
